چکیده

The article by Chia et al (see www.aaojournal.org/article/ S0161-6420(15)00675-2/fulltext) in this issue of Ophthalmology reports 5-year follow-up from the Atropine for the Treatment of Myopia (ATOM) 2 study. ATOM2 now covers a 2-year initial phase using 0.5%, 0.1%, and 0.01% atropine, a 1-year washout period, and a further 2 years of treatment with 0.01% atropine in those who progressed more than 0.5 diopters (D) in the washout year. The article shows that 0.01% atropine produces better reduction in progression than higher doses, with marked reductions in the short-term side effects that required the use of photochromic reading glasses with higher doses and with marked reduction in the rebound effect that is observed during washout after higher doses. Longer-term follow-up is still required, but this represents an important step forward. Control of myopia progression has become an important clinical goal because of concerns about the significantly increased risks of pathologic myopia in those with high myopia. It is clear there has been amajor increase in the prevalence

Nitric Oxide (NO) Mediates the Inhibition of Form-Deprivation Myopia by Atropine in Chicks

Myopia is the most common childhood refractive disorder. Atropine inhibits myopia progression, but its mechanism is unknown. Here, we show that myopia-prevention by atropine requires production of nitric oxide (NO). Form-deprivation myopia (FDM) was induced in week-old chicks by diffusers over the right eye (OD); the left eye (OS) remained ungoggled. On post-goggling days 1, 3, and 5, OD receiv...

How to effectively manage myopia

Myopia has become epidemic in the world. Without effective control, the progression may lead to excessive myopia with severe complications affecting vision and ocular alignment. The genetic factors and environmental factors of myopia are closely interrelated to each other. Asian ethnicity and parental myopia, among other genetic factors, influence the refractive outcome dramatically when enviro...

PURPOSE To compare the safety and efficacy of different concentrations of atropine eyedrops in controlling myopia progression over 5 years. DESIGN Randomized, double-masked clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS A total of 400 children originally randomized to receive atropine 0.5%, 0.1%, or 0.01% once daily in both eyes in a 2:2:1 ratio. Role of Chronic Inflammation in Myopia Progression: Clinical Evidence and Experimental Validation

Prevention and treatment of myopia is an important public problem worldwide. We found a higher incidence of myopia among patients with inflammatory diseases such as type 1 diabetes mellitus (7.9%), uveitis (3.7%), or systemic lupus erythematosus (3.5%) compared to those without inflammatory diseases (p<0.001) using data from children (<18years old) in the National Health Insurance Research data...

Overnight orthokeratology is comparable with atropine in controlling myopia

BACKGROUND Many efforts have been invested in slowing progression of myopia. Among the methods, atropine administration and orthokeratology (OK) are most widely used. This study analyzed the efficacy of atropine and OK lens in controlling myopia progression and elongation of axial length. METHODS This retrospective study included 105 patients (210 eyes) who wore OK lenses and 105 patients (21...
